Window 10 :: The Evangelist

This window is inspired by 1 Corinthians 13:13, drawing heavily from its imagery of faith, hope and love. As a whole, the window represents evangelism to the lost, which is a key aspect of God’s salvific intent.

Panel 3 - Shield with Heart - Love

This panel depicts a blue shield with a red heart inside it. The shield is a common method of displaying heraldry in Christian art. Evangelism begins with love. The first step toward evangelism is love, and Jesus’s first step toward enacting God's plan for salvation begins with love.

Panel 5 - Shield with Anchor Cross - Hope - Hebrews 6:19

This panel displays a shield with an anchor cross. The anchor cross is often adopted by Methodist missionaries as a symbol and has been used throughout Christian history because of the reference to Hebrew 6:19: our hope in the cross and in God’s plan is secure, like an anchor.

Panel 7 - Shield with Cross - Faith

The shield with a cross on it depicted here represents the Shield of Faith. It is the final goal of the evangelist, having first given love and offered hope to the lost, culminating in a true faith. This was part of the work that Jesus did on earth.

Panel 9 - Shield of St. Paul - Sword behind the Scriptures

This window shows the shield of St. Paul, which is the open Scripture with a sword behind it. This symbol represents the power of Paul’s letters and contributions to the New Testament and is in reference to the Sword of the Spirit. St. Paul is present in this window because he is the ideal evangelist.
