Window 13 :: The Crucifixion

The Crucifixion window shows the Passion of Jesus Christ. This window shows the betrayal of Jesus and his crucifixion. Jesus has been crucified and we have put him there.

Panel 2 - Cross in a Cup

This panel shows a cross in a cup. This is a reference to Christ’s prayer in the garden of Gethsemane. Christ prayed “Father, if you are willing, remove this cup from me. Nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.” (Luke 22:42) The Cross within the cup represents the coming crucifixion of Christ. Jesus knew that his death was soon, yet he still allowed it to happen.

Panel 4 - Lantern

This panel displays a lantern. The lantern is a symbol of Judas Iscariot’s betrayal of Jesus. The lantern is used for the symbol because Judas traditionally carried one into the garden when he led the soldiers to arrest Jesus. In the progression of this window, the lantern displays that Jesus had been betrayed.

Panel 5 - Rooster

This window shows a rooster, which is a reference to St. Peter’s threefold betrayal of Christ. Even in Jesus' most desperate moments, St. Peter had betrayed him.

Panel 7, 8 - The Cross on Golgotha

This panel displays the Cross of Christ, flanked on both sides by other crosses. This is a direct image of Christ crucifixion. The Light of the World had been snuffed out. Jesus died.

Panel 10 - The Crown of Thorns

Intended as mocking reverence, the crown of thorns was placed upon the head of the true King of the World. The Light of the World was slain.
